A jury has found Trevor Shannon guilty of second degree murder.

Shannon's sentence carries with it life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years after shooting Evan Wilkes in the head with a handgun at a Kelowna house party in April of last year.

Debra Wilkes was seen speaking with Shannon's mother once the verdict was read:

"I said that I was sorry for her because she did lose a son aswell because she won't see him but at least he is still alive and she can talk to him, I can't talk to my son. She didn't put the gun in his hands, she didn't by it for him. Its Trevor's fault."

Wilkes is hopeing to speak to Kelowna high schools at graduation next year on the dangers of handguns.

Todays young people have not been taught that we don't always get our way and there are disappointments in life that must be learned from, not strike out when things don't go our way. Just stand back from a group of young people and listen to their conversation, it seems to revolve around giving someone a 'beat down' because they looked at them funny or stared too long or their mannerism just annoyed them.

My heart goes out to both mothers, obviously have your son killed is a unimaginable nightmare, but, having a son placed in jail for 10 years and the knowledge that your son committed such a heinous act must be very disturbing.

It is about time justice is done. If you carry a gun around the chances are you are going to harm someone! Wake up and smell the roses. Why does everyone act so dumb in our society?
